AIAA Applied Surrogate Modeling Workshop (AASM)
AASM Vision
The AASM group envisions advancing the integration of AI-driven surrogate modeling into aerospace design, optimization, and analysis.
AASM Workshop Overview
What is the AASM Workshop?
The Applied Surrogate Modeling (AASM) Workshop is a premier technical interchange hosted by the AIAA AASM group, focused on advancing the practical use of surrogate modeling technologies within aerospace digital engineering. The workshop convenes researchers, engineers, and program leaders from industry, government, and academia to present, evaluate, and collaborate on methods that enable accurate, efficient, and deployable surrogate models for real-world aerospace applications.
Why Surrogate Modeling?
Digital engineering workflows demand modeling techniques that are both computationally efficient and physically meaningful. Surrogate models — including reduced-order, statistical, and AI/machine learning-based techniques — offer the ability to approximate high-fidelity physics simulations, wind tunnel experiments, and flight test data in near real time. However, many modeling approaches remain siloed in theory or specialized domains. The AASM Workshop addresses this gap by focusing on applied models that integrate seamlessly into design, analysis, and certification workflows.
How Does the Workshop Work?
Each AASM Workshop features:
-
Curated Technical Sessions showcasing applied research and development efforts across the surrogate modeling spectrum.
-
Invited Panels and Grand Challenge Discussions to identify gaps, propose benchmarks, and align on standardization opportunities.
-
Cross-community Engagement with stakeholders from professional societies (e.g., IEEE), government programs, and commercial aerospace partners.
-
Collaborative Dataset and Case Studies to encourage repeatable benchmarking, reproducibility, and collaborative advancement of methods.
Why Attend or Participate?
Participants gain:
-
Insight into the current state of applied surrogate modeling across the aerospace sector.
-
Exposure to benchmark datasets, modeling challenges, and real-world deployment scenarios.
-
Opportunities to help define standards, shape grand challenges, and directly influence the direction of surrogate modeling practice in aerospace.
Benchmark Cases Overview
To advance the field of applied aerodynamics surrogate modeling, the AIAA Applied Aerodynamics SurrogateModeling (AASM) group has curated a set of benchmark cases tailored to the unique challenges of this domain. These benchmarks aim to provide a standardized framework for evaluating surrogate modeling methods and foster collaboration across academia, industry, and government.
